Because those huge gaps in gearing feel bad and wouldn't let me do threshold rides on back to back days.

I rode 50-40-30x13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21 in the 8 speed era. Same low gear as 53-39x13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26 for the mountains but with nice spacing for the plains.

If I wanted a gear as low as 34x32 today it'd be in the form of 50-39-24x13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-26 10 speed or 46-36-24x12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25 with 11 cogs.
