question on single speed mtb

I have an older gary fisher paragon (?1994). I recently started mountain biking again and want to upgrade or purchase a new bike. At the trails yesterday I saw a guy with a singlespeed and was intrigued. I love the simplicity of it and I can imaging that your feet feel more connected to the wheels without the deraileur and all. What are common gearings for them? I am going to try and find similar gears on my bike and leave it in those to see what it would be like ( I know it will not be exact but just to get an idea, I have a lot of hills in my area). If I like it is the fisher a good enough bike to convert? I am thinking of converting this bike and buying a new full suspension bike to have both.

thanks
