Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

question on single speed mtb

I have an older gary fisher paragon (?1994). I recently started mountain biking again and want to upgrade or purchase a new bike. At the trails yesterday I saw a guy with a singlespeed and was intrigued. I love the simplicity of it and I can imaging that your feet feel more connected to the wheels without the deraileur and all. What are common gearings for them? I am going to try and find similar gears on my bike and leave it in those to see what it would be like ( I know it will not be exact but just to get an idea, I have a lot of hills in my area). If I like it is the fisher a good enough bike to convert? I am thinking of converting this bike and buying a new full suspension bike to have both.

thanks

Bikes: specialized p.1, redline single x

i run a 32-16, but its really personal, its up to you, its also based on how many hills you have to ride, and such

most people i've talked to run a 2:1 ratio (like 32-16 but it really doesn't matter the gearing as much as the ratio). my friend sean had his raleigh set up as a SS for a while with a 2:1 and he could take hilly trails no problem.

and any bike is good enough to convert to a SS especially a bike you've already paid for... and the paragon is a nice bike
