If your wrists/arms/shoulders are hurting, your fitment must be way off. AFAIK there shouldn't be much weight on your arms really.
To add to this, remember to check the geometry of whatever you end up with, because a 54cm could have a top tube of 51cm (for example). You could be a 54 on one frame and a 58 on another.
