This is why I ride the last/first couple miles of my commute on the sidewalk, there's no shoulder near here and trying to assert my legal right to a road lane is simply suicide so I don't even attempt it.

If you want to assert your right to be on the road, and there isn't sufficient clearance for cars to safely pass you without moving into oncoming traffic, you
have to take the lane, so they can't even TRY to squeeze past you.
That's when cyclists get killed: they try to be nice by hugging the shoulder on a narrow road, and they get clipped by cars who view it as an opportunity to thread the needle between you and that oncoming SUV... well, if they decide they don't have enough room, you can bet they're not going to head-on the SUV.
