I don't get it.

In the city, cyclist are probably kind of a 'pain in the ass' if there are lots of them. Not all cyclists have good road etiquette and motorist also will fear hitting them.

This guy is talking about opening bike lanes throughout the city. He misspeaks a bit and says it like he is going to put people on the sidewalk but what I think they are talking about is simply bike lanes. Can you rocket down them at 30 mph, probably not, but for most commuters in the city, they won't be going nearly that fast. If you want to rocket down the street, their are far better places to do it than in center city. I think this is a great thing, its tough to get support for cyclist and this guy as actually trying to get money put toward making cyclist in the city safer and helping them get out of busy traffic.

If anyone has had the pleasure of driving or cycling through Copenhagen, you will see just how well something like this can work. Cyclist have a nice wide bike lane between the road and the sidewalk, follow all the traffic signals, motorist are curteous (though this does have to be trained) and give cyclist the right of way. Its a fantastic system that allows cyclist to roam the entire city safely and it dramatically cuts down on motorist congestion.
