This, or use a small amount of Simple Green on a rag, making sure to wipe just the outside of the plates. This'll get rid of the gunk on the unnecessary areas (the outside surface of the side plates), while leaving it where it should be (the pins and inside surface of the plates). When it comes time for a full cleaning, Simple Green is great for that, too.
