Charity rides are not bike races. Reverse snobism and underdog syndrome are a waste of time. If you are fit you can ride whatever you want and not worry about what others are doing, even if they will not mind their own business. To get really fit, race your bicycle.
If this comes off rude, it's because I hate old vs. new, steel vs. carbon arguments as they make no sense to me at all.
I've gotten into the habit of leaving the charity ride a bit early to beat the rush. Getting stuck behind an army of squirrely riders that talk more than they ride is no fun. The faster riders pass me somewheres out on the road and I get to enjoy the ride in peace.
