Has anyone done a "Lightaction" upgrade?

I just purchased a beautiful and very well kept Nishiki Olympic 4130 Chromoly with a decent Sugino crank, nice weinmann 700 wheels(quick release front&back). I updated it with 44cm bars(I'm a big guy) off a felt bike, 105 aero brake levers, and a nice selle italia seat, all of which were taken off my Peugeot.

Anyways, the only thing I'm bummed about is the gears... it's a 12 speed, and the components are "Lightaction", which, from my understanding, are not too reliable. Can I upgrade the derailleurs to Shimano 105's? And, are all "long" rear derailleurs the same size?

TIA
