Well, part of the reason I want to upgrade is because my current bike could use about one hundred dollars worth of tuning up (wheels, brakes...ugh) that I've been putting off. It rides well but sometimes I can't help feeling it's reaching the end of its life.

I'm inferring that you are not inclined to doing the maintenance yourself. That's fine, but I seriously doubt your bike is "reaching the end of its life". All bikes need maintenance at some point, and I don't think the wear parts for your Schwinn are any more expensive than those for a new(er) bike.
