I propose that most of the people in the 9x group are, in fact, idiots. You know the type- wrong way riders, ninjas etc etc. Do idiotic things like this and you're going to have an accident. The injuries don't result from not wearing a helmet, they are the result of being a moron- the same sort of person that would run across a railway crossing when the barriers are down and lights flashing. I assume there are more idiots that don't wear helmets than idiots that do.
This doesn't imply that simply not wearing a helmet makes you more likely to have an accident. Ride sensibly and you don't place yourself in these dangerous situations in the first place.
