Bikes: Current 79 Nishiki Custum Sport, Jeunet 620, notable previous bikes P.K. Ripper loop tail, Kawahara Laser Lite, Paramount Track full chrome, Raliegh Internatioanl, Motobecan Super Mirage. 59 Crown royak 3 speed

Would you consider something like a 50/40/26 with a 12-21 8 speed cassette?
With that set up it seems you would have a a lot of duplicate unused gears If your looking to increase your gear range as said by others why not switch to a wider range cassette and up front gearing I have run a 52/36 11-32 8 speed on vintage Dr's. You could even go a little more if you DR's will handle it and you can find the rings for your crank.
