Yeah, if you get a cheap bike, it'll probably break a lot and you will waste time and money getting it fixed. A better bike will last longer.

Make sure whatever bike you decide on has eyelets for rack & fenders.
I always recommend the Topeak MTX system of racks and trunk bags, because they are relatively inexpensive and readily available and because they are SO COOL. I'm a big fan of
not using backpacks or messemger bags and getting the load off you YOU, and onto the bike. So a trunk bag for your change of clothes/lunch/work stuff & a pannier for the laptop would be a very nice setup, IMO.
