For your first road bike, you probably only need to replace those pedals with either SPD style pedals with Mountain Bike shoes, or go clipless pedals and road shoes. I prefer Speedplay zero pedals. But do this later after you've had some experience with the bike. It's a good entry level road bike with a good frame and reliable drivetrain. I rented one for a day and it performed very well. It shifted correctly and stopped when I wanted it to, the ride was more than acceptable and wasn't too heavy. Good choice.
