After hearing Doug's story a while back about how even someone who takes as much care of bikes as he does can run into a concrete parking garage & destroy them, I've been considering getting a trunk rack & reserving the roof rack for kayaks. This may be what pushes me over to that direction...I could probably buy a trunk rack for less than what the roof rack mounts would sell for used anyway.

The only disadvantage is that I occasionally take my bike with me to school & hit up some trails on my way home or stop at a bar/grill for some beer & grub on the way home from the trails when I ride with a friend, & that extra security is great for peace of mind. I also keep all my gear in the trunk so I never forget it & I'd lose trunk access with a rack on it. It's a trade off, but probably my laziness will keep me from changing anything & I'll just try my hardest to be more mindful in the future.
