A seatpost rack is unlikely to be strong enough to handle a gallon of milk.
I'd take a look at WALD baskets, and get a front mounted one. I have a gigantic Wald basket on my grocery bike, and I can fit 3 sacks of groceries in there without any problems. I carried 5x total 1 gallon containers of oil and coolant 4 miles once, when I was working on my Jeep.
