Risk wear? Pfft. That thing won't even start appreciating (if at all) for another 15 years. And then it'll be a $1000 bike. That's like being paid $15/year to mothball it. It'll never be all that amazingly collectible- they sold a lot of these, and it's from the era after Lemond was sold to trek.
Just ride it and love it.
I'd be surprised if you could get anything wider than a 25mm tire to clear the fork.
