Like the others have said... Indexing? Lean towards a Shimano drive train.
I can't speak for these shifters in particular, but I have found the friction mode on some other Suntour shifters to be more of a "Friction" mode, with the detents still there, just softer. If that's the case, then using these with a Shimano drivetrain might not work.
