The Accushift system is the system that brought down Suntour in the products division. I would stay away from it and I love Suntour stuff, just not that. It had problems with tolerance that the Shimano SIS system didn't have as much of. If your thinking of building an older bike up either use Shimano SIS or use Suntour friction systems, Suntour had the best operational and most durable friction system in the world.

The RH shifter does have the option to change over to friction:

It functions just like a Power Ratchet, so it should work fine with a conventional friction drive train.
Like the others have said... Indexing? Lean towards a Shimano drive train.

I can't speak for these shifters in particular, but I have found the friction mode on some other Suntour shifters to be more of a "Friction" mode, with the detents still there, just softer. If that's the case, then using these with a Shimano drivetrain might not work.

My opinion is that these shifters are fantastic, but that price is just exorbitant. If you have a shop near you that sells used parts, or ask on Craigslist, you should be able to get old thumb shifters for a few bucks. As other posters have mentioned, the shifters in question won't index unless you use a Suntour Accushift derailer, but in friction mode they will work with pretty much anything you hook them too... also, they're ideal if you're building a bike that's designed to survive a nuclear/zombie/pandemic/financial meltdown/end-of-days SHTF scenario because they will work fine for many, many years without ever requiring attention.

I have Shimano derailleurs and freewheel. I was planning on using the friction mode on the rear but I read somewhere that the ones that switch from indexed to friction don't have the ratchet action and just don't feel that great. If the indexes aren't going to line up then I should probably keep looking for something else.
