If I'm riding a utility or tourer, I have a bag for sundry items. My sunglasses go into a protective clamshell case.
On a road bike with no bags, I simply use my jersey pocket.
If I'm going out on a ride where I know that the lighting conditions will be changing (overcast to sunny or vice versa, or light-to-darkness), I bring a second set (amber or clear in addition to sunglasses) in my jersey pocket and switch when necessary.
I'm not a big fan of hooking them on a shirt collar, as I've had too many pairs fall when doing this hastily over many years. Why risk scratching, damage, or loss?
