CX bikes have been the really popular in Europe (here in the north at least) for a quite a while now, due to their versatility: you can can ride them all year, and with a change of wheels/tyres you have a road bike for the occasional group ride. CX bikes are the "new hybrid", I seem them almost as often as hybrid bikes on my way to work.
