This puzzles me. I have both Nexus and Alfine hubs on different bikes, and they seem equally functional and well-made. The Alfine-11 has its oil bath, which I prefer for servicing. Both types of hub are able to shift at rest.

Apart from that... nice bike!

I heard the Alfine hubs have a shift cable that pulls up around the back rear of the hub:

Nexus have one that pulls forward along the bottom. The former is supposedly better at shifting under load. I use Nexus as well and it shifts fine at rest.

My Alfine 11 wraps around the top. The only time or didn’t shift well was when I let the first oil change go way too long, and then it stuck in the winter. I changed it and now it’s fine.

Yes, that's what I was saying. Also worth noting that different IGH have or don't have helical cut gears. If the commenter saying Alfine shifts so much better than Nexus had tried a Nexus-3 or 7 for that comparison instead of a Nexus-8, for example, that would be another difference.

With the Electra recall in effect, Nexus 8 are ridiculously cheap right now, though. I got a fully built Nexus 8 wheel for $130 shipped last week. Less than half what my last Nexus 8 cost. So good time to upgrade at least that far.

This is true, in my limited experience with several Nexus 7 and 6, and one Alfine 11. Also, the Nexus hubs are "Low Normal", meaning that they go to the lowest gear when cable tension is released.
Alfine hubs are "High Normal". I suspect this is related to the direction the cable pulls around the Cassette Joint.

Yeah, the manual also points out Shimano use the force of pedaling to assist shifts in a certain direction:

So that trick can only be used for upshifts or downshifts, I imagine, depending on the hub design.

Here's the current configuration of a bike I commute on when it's not wet, snowing, nor too hot. It's reasonably quick (compared to the folder) and very low maintenance. (compared to chain drive) I've added the Topeak BeamRack, which is svelte, but deceptively heavy. The conventionally mounted MTX rack is lighter and will carry more weight, but is less aero and more nerdy.

I do like the integrated rubber strap that came with this rack; it has come in handy a couple times already. In the 2nd photo below, you can see I have one saddle and a couple bottle cages strapped to it after I bought and installed a new saddle at the bike shop. I like that it's height-adjustable too; I can get it right down next to the tire if I want, or leave a bit of clearance for the rubber strap to wrap around the bottom of it. It has a good tail light mount, too.

That is a cool bike! It pains me to see the exposed chain knocking paint off of the frame. Treat yourself to a new lock and protect that paint, which is protecting the bike from rust.

Don't worry I retouched the small nicks with nail polish and rust proofed the frame with Jenolite

Got rid of the drop bars and clipless pedals on my Dahon. Now a much more relaxed ride which I usually ride 1-3 times a week if I feel like going a bit slower and more relaxed pace than my standard drop bar commuter.
