As for apps, I use Endomondo with a bluetooth heart rate monitor to log my rides. I also have a standard bike computer to glance at for speed, etc. I keep the cell phone screen off.
For navigation I use Osmand. I map out my route on ridewithgps.com, download the .gpx file and put it on my phone. Osmand provides voice navigation to follow the route.
I use "Real Time GPS Tracker" so my wife can use her phone to see exactly where I am and how fast I'm moving. She knows if I'm not moving there may be a problem.
For entertainment, either Pandora or Tunein Radio. For rides over 2 hours I have to employ the external battery pack.
