I recently moved up to the modern age with the purchase of a Galaxy S3. My old phone had a visible antenna.... I like the tracking programs like mapmyride etc. but need a good cell phone holder. I bought a waterproof case but would like other suggestions. Also, what mapping programs do you like?

I haven't had it long enough to figure out if it does work while it is off. If it does, that will be cool. I have had a computer on my bike for several years and not been distracted enough by it to crash.
Big brother couldn't care less about me, so I really don't care if he is tracking me.
I just would like to know of a good holder or setup. I am not trying to start another, "Your too stupid to ride and listen to music, watch a gps, watch tv, bla, bla, bla" thread.

i have the gs2 map my ride will work when it goes off. fuuny about map my ride though it doesnt record the same amount of mile both my comps do. part of my route takes me to a 3 lvl parking structure and i ride laps inside of it and the sats dont see me there haha . i just enter the number manually on the site when i get home
as far as battery life i have run mine for 3 hours no prob. i also picked up 2 spare batteries on amazon for cheap \M/\M/
that phone bag looks sweet. i keep my phone in a ziplock in a handlebar bag.

I got this* case from eBay which suits my needs perfectly and can be placed almost anywhere. Also the touch screen works great through the plastic cover.
As for software, I prefer Endomodo (free version) which is also supported by a nice website where you can manually add workouts/routes in case you forget to turn the software on.

A warning: if you have a protective case, most holders that make you slide your phone will not work. I learned this the hard way.... a few times.

I asked a couple of different companies about that. The one I actually bought, I am not sure if it will fit or not. They said probably. That's one reason I started this thread.
I have seen a lot that I like thanks for the suggestions. I really like the TOMTOP but it looks like they don't ship to the U.S. I guess I will try to contact them.

I like the MotionX GPS app. And I tuck my phone away in my back pocket while it's running.

I would measure your phone and ask them about it. Also ask them about their return policy.

I have been disappointed with what I've tried since getting the phone and the holders. The phone, even without the protective case, tends to be too big for the holder.

I got the same one and like it. Fits my HTC Thunderbolt well.

As for apps, I use Endomondo with a bluetooth heart rate monitor to log my rides. I also have a standard bike computer to glance at for speed, etc. I keep the cell phone screen off.
For navigation I use Osmand. I map out my route on ridewithgps.com, download the .gpx file and put it on my phone. Osmand provides voice navigation to follow the route.
I use "Real Time GPS Tracker" so my wife can use her phone to see exactly where I am and how fast I'm moving. She knows if I'm not moving there may be a problem.
For entertainment, either Pandora or Tunein Radio. For rides over 2 hours I have to employ the external battery pack.

I've got a Galaxy Note, and it works when the screen is off. If I'm using it for GPS tracking, as I do when I'm riding my second bike which doesn't have a mount for my Garmin GPS, it's either in the back pocket of my jersey or in the outside pocket of my pannier. In either case, it tracks perfectly well - I use a program called GPS Essentials to produce a GPX file, and Strava to log the ride directly.

I was getting a part for my Buell at a Harley shop and they had a Ram Mount on display so I checked the fit of my Samsung phone with protective case in the mount and it fit just fine. Heavier than the bicycle stuff, but probably stronger. Not sure how well the RamMount will secure the phone on a rigid lightweight non-suspension bicycle though.

Might be worth checking into as another option.

I have a timbuk2 holder that goes right onto a shoulder strap of my backpack. All the gps stuff still runs with the screen off, and I can play music from it and hear it with out headphones. And it's easy to access when/if needed (only when at a complete stop of course, but also when not, so I hear) It's been one of my better random purchases, holds my cell plus credit card/insurance card/cash no issues.

When it came time for a new phone, I skipped the 4g in exchange for a phone that was water proof, and damn near indestructible. I picked up the Casio Commando and havent had any issues. I throw it in my Chrome holder attached to my Seagull bag strap and use Endomondo and it tracks fine. When I first got the phone, I bought a handlebar mount that failed while going about 25-30 down a gravel road. The phone barely had a scratch and the screen was perfect.

+1 for Endomondo. I gave up on mapmyride. When it works it's great... when it works. I have tons of RAM stuff including cell phone holder (I use on motorcycle) but I found it too bulky for bicycle use. I bought a $20 holder from nashbar (looks just like the eBay one) and it works great for my HTC thunderbolt
