I suspect that the classics are in garages and sit collecting dust, or worse, rust. When I was in Europe in 2007 I saw lots of classics in the urban centers of smaller italian towns, usually ridden by older folks often with upright handlebars, some of them were even clearly retired racing steeds, others shiny old bikes equipped with Nuovo Record and the bars swapped out. I would guess that there are more high end bikes from the 1970s in Europe but that they are under-valued and many still haven't been unearthed. But I could be wrong.

As far as mass production goes, I imagine T-mar has hit the nail on the head.
