Picked up 28 bikes plus parts being thrown out due to Sandy, most have no water damage as the owners were taking advantage of bulk trash pickup. I haven't had time to take pics yet as I have been cleaning some of the bikes that did get submerged or were questionable, nothing top end but some good bikes none the less. 3 Schwinn Worlds, one LE Tour mixte, a 1976 Ted Williams Free Spirit ( Puch), A Raleigh MTB with Suntour Accushift 7spd, a 1979 Schwinn Spitfire 5 MTB ( my favorite so far) with 12ga spokes, atom rear drum brake with 5spd freewheel.
A 1998 Nishiki Cascade MTB with full STX RC 8spd which was in rough shape due to seeing salt water over a long period of time, saved the frame, seat post, stem & bars forks, brakes & rapid fire shifters, the wheels & derailleurs were toast. A few Trek 800 series MTB's, a few 3 & 10spd Free Spirits in good shape, a older Bianchi hybrid with steel wheels, a Raleigh hybrid with steel wheels. A Auto Bike (hey it was free), a few cruisers & some lower end Schwinn MTB's. There were a lot of good parts on some bikes I left behind but I did strip seats, ( most of the seats on the above bikes were like new making it worth picking them up) derailleurs ( if nothing else I can use the jockey wheels) and a few shifters. I hope to get some pictures in the next few days as time allows.
I already started on the Schwinn Spitfire 5 by stripping the wheels ( they were steel & very rusty) down to the hubs & ordering some wide aluminum rims & stainless 12ga spokes to rebuild them. Everything on the bike is original and just needs some cleaning and a OA soak to clean up. I want to save as much as I can of the original parts but I felt for my area that the wheels would be better off with SS spokes and aluminum rims rather then steel, I will keep the original rims & spokes though as the wheels can be rechromed & the spokes aren't in bad shape.
