Just measure it, should take five seconds or less. It can be done with the crank installed on the bike. Check out Sheldon Brown site for very simple instructions.

Around here, replacement Suntour derailleurs are very inexpensive. Sounds like you need to find a good bike shop for assistance, or spend some time learning about bike maintenance. Bike maintenance is not hard, but does take some research (all on line) to get familiar with tools and techniques, and you will need to invest in some tools.
