the have a resin composite half plate like most low-mid mtb shoes. so while they are not as stiff as road shoes or top-end mtb shoes they do the trick.

i looked at the new version IIIs at rei but did not like how the spud plate is now offset on the left side of the shoe. imo, this can result in torsional stress.
