Then spend $50 - $75 for a tune up and having the machine built wheels trued after a few months ( might or might not happen). So now you have spent $110 - $125 at the bike shop and saved $75 - $90. Then you decide to upgrade the cheap saddle or tires on the Dawes and your savings are nil. Just opening your eyes to all the possibilities. With the LBS, you can see what you are getting. You can look at what hubs are used, or what headset or bottom bracket. With Bikesdirect, not so much. And if there is an issue, you do not have a flesh and blood advocate in your corner, you have phone and email and UPS to deal with.
I know that my bike shop fitted me for my Trek 1200, swapped out stems free of charge, installed my pedals and made sure my cleats were adjusted correctly all free of charge, or maybe they used part of the $200 or so price difference from LBS to BikesDirect to offer me those services. To this day, I can walk in with my shoes after I replace cleats and they will toss me on their fitting bike and get the cleats dialed in for free.
Ask you LBS about things like that. What happens if you need a longer or shorter stem, do they do saddle exchanges, cleat adjustment, etc. It all adds up.
