I never was much for drop bars, I hate changing hand positions but I like how narrow they are so I did a flop and chop on my road bike to get a bull horn arrangement which I liked for a time but I found uncomfortable when I would crouch down for speed or in high winds due to my wrist angle if I wanted to keep my hands on the brifters. lately I have gone with very narrow straight bars (stash bar 2, 425mm) I have managed to cram on locking grips, brake levers and a rapid fire shifter and I like them a lot more, they are just about the same width as my shoulders and I can crouch down comfortably as low as with drops and never take my hands off the controls and when I am riding sitting up its the same. the components are also a whole lot cheaper than brifters.
