I remember another annoyance. I'm not bothered by cars overtaking me on residential streets, and ride far enough right to permit it where safe, but at my old office I noticed a cranky older cyclist sometimes in the same street, who would deliberately take the lane even where not necessary, and cuss and give the finger to cars behind him if they tried to squeeze by, or honked to pass.
One day he rode up beside me and started to ride two abreast, striking up a conversation. I glanced back, and noticed he had a couple of cars tailing him, and was making me part of his passive aggressive act. So I said something like "Sorry, you're on your own", and pulled over to the curb till the whole convoy passed.
The horse racing analogy, and excusing riders for their being boxed in is pure bull****, they need take to some deserted road if they cannot do it properly on a bike path.
Maybe the old cuss of a cyclist knows a thing or two more about riding than you. I don't "accommodate" motorists on all occasions, and I will position myself in the roadway to not let motorists pass by if I feel it would endanger my personal safety, and at times, I will take the full lane if there is more than one lane traveling in the same direction.
