One other thing to think about: Even if you feel exhausted after a ride, or exhausted the next day, you may find that your energy returns when you start riding. I've had days when I start a ride, and I really don't feel up to riding. But often, after 10 or so miles, I feel great, and have plenty of energy.

IOW, your energy level sitting on the couch the day after a ride may not be indicative of the energy you'd have if you were riding.
