Question number two first-You're correct, you don't have to pick your ride before you get there. Some times I don't know what one I'll do till I see what time I get there and how the weather is.
Question number one-I'm not real sure, my only experience with the tow path has been walking it with a dog and I remember thinking that if I had a mountain bike I would like to ride it, but I wouldn't try on a road bike. That being said, the section I was on was well north of where this ride starts so I don't know if the condition down there is much different.
