Thanks everyone. I don't work my FD that much anyway, just my stem clamp for it looks awful (rusty and bare on the right side now that the RD is on the Retroshift (which I can't praise enough for how awesome it is.
No such thing as a friction derailleur, they all move fluidly through their travel. The indexing, or lack thereof, is up to the shifter as it metes out cable.
What I was driving towards is that the left DX or XT flat bar shifters are friction shifters. i.e. you can just use one of those and mothball your left 105 shift lever.
