is there a standard shift boss under something like this?
I like the Paul's thumbies and would love one for my FD shifter, but I don't want to spend that kind of money.
Is there a standard Shimano shift boss under these shifters that I could mount my SL-1050s to?

Not that I know of, that's why they're so novel- and so expensive.
If you've got an XT RD thumbshifter- find an XT FD thumbshifter...
Or are you trying to disassemble the XT shifter to mount your 1050 shifter to?

OH you want to use that clamp on your road bike right?
No those shifters are self contained and lock to the base by 4 little numbs that fit into the base. If you had a set of these thumbshifter there no reason you can't use them on your road bike assuming the number of speeds match.

No, those DX and XT thumb shifters mount the shifter from the bottom up instead of the top down like a paul's thumbie.
[most] Bar end shifters have a standard shift boss though.

This. And especially because the left shifter on these is just friction. At least I think it is.

where's a good place to find just ONE bar end shifter boss?
Thanks everyone. I don't work my FD that much anyway, just my stem clamp for it looks awful (rusty and bare on the right side now that the RD is on the Retroshift (which I can't praise enough for how awesome it is.

What I was driving towards is that the left DX or XT flat bar shifters are friction shifters. i.e. you can just use one of those and mothball your left 105 shift lever.

sorry, I meant my FD lever is friction.
I'm torn between using a flat bar shifter and a bar end shifter right now.
Ok, well my question is answered for now. guess it's something to think about. I'll just ride it with the FD lever on the stem. it's no big deal.

I'm not sure I'm entirely following you.
If you are riding with an XT thumbshifter on the right, and if you find an XT thumbshifter for the left- providing the clamps fit the bars- then you've got "matching" shifters. I think that would make most people happy.
If I'm following you, you're bummed because you want an XT thumbshifter on the right and you want a 1050 shifter on the left.

clarification:
that's not my bike there
My bike is a road bike with a Retroshift for the RD and a stem shift for the FD (both levers are SL-1050s)
I wanted to mount my FD lever onto a thumb shifter, but didn't want to pay the big premium for the Paul's Thumbies.
I saw this old XT thumb shifter today and wondered if that used a boss like a downtube shifter, because I could get one of those super cheap and mount my SL-1050 to it
I've learned that's not the case.
Now I'm debating a Paul's Thumbie or a barcon for the FD. I'm leaning Barcon if I can find a single one for cheap.

Sorry for the misinterpretation.
You'd figure someone would find a nice, inexpensive way of mounting shifters on the bars-

Read the description for these: https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh13.htm. You will need the flat spacers.

Actually, I have an older silver colored Deore, similar to the one shown, that looks to be a 2-position indexed lefty. It has to turn a pretty long ways, to click into it's "notch", but then it seems like it would hold there really well, going by the force needed to move it again.
