The original did not have a flat-metal front mount section at all. It was just another round aluminum tube like the rest of the frame, bent downward, then bent again and flattened to fit behind (or in front of) the rear brake bridge. You can see it, sort of, in this pic:
Ahhh, I get it now... I'm guessing the rack is roughly the same age as my '82 Miyata 610, so it should work out nicely then!
