Jim Blackburn Rack & Bor Yueh cage... any info?

Not the most compelling post I'm sure, but I always like to know the history of my stuff if I can find any info. I know Jim Blackburn is now Blackburn, but curious how old this rack might be, where it was made and what the side attachments were for... some sort of proprietary mount?

The Bor Yueh cage came from the Box O' Mystery at my local co-op and matches the rack nicely. Any idea how old it is, and whats up with the unique design?

I suspected that Bor Yueh = Rob Huey, but it surprisingly never dawned on me until I uploaded the pic to Facebook and an old friend pointed out that it's Rob Huey spelt backwards! So obvious. It does seem to be a relatively early example, and a bit of an oddity (just what I like).

Actually, the surname is not spelled backwards; the letters are just jumbled.

Is Rob Huey some sort of cycling icon? I've never heard that name before.

Bor Yueh are from Taiwan, I always assumed the name was in Mandarin or a Taiwanese name.

There's a lot of info on Jim Blackburn racks. I believe those extra rails are for an aftermarket pannier system, I think the brand was Eclipse.

Bikes: Trek 7.5 Hybrid, Trek 1.1 Road, Holdsworth touring,Raleigh International,Ritchey Commando,Italvega Speciallissimo,et.al.

The rack , with the Jim Blackburn name inscribed into it, is one of the earlier racks made. As noted above, the add-ons are to convert the rack for Eclipse panniers. As far as I have known, Bor Yueh is a low price Taiwan or Chinese cage.

IIRC, the original Jim Blackburn racks didn't have an adjustable front tang. That version with the flat forward mount was at least a year or two later. Yes, the add-on thingy is for Eclipse panniers. Those mounts are pretty scarce now, as are the Eclipse panniers themselves.

Great info, thank you! The front tang on this is actually not adjustable if I am understanding the adjustable part correctly. The tang mounts to the frame via two holes instead of a drilled out slot to allow it to slide.

That's an interesting bottle cage. Does it have a lip at the bottom to prevent the bottle from sliding down? I have a couple Bor Yueh cages from the late 80s and have found they work quite well. Nice welds, simple design, lightweight, don't flex or drop bottles--what more can you ask? I don't know if the current bottles are made to the same specs (I suspect not). They may be a low-price Taiwanese brand, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of their vintage cages.

I had these Bor Yueh cages on my Look until I replaced them with T.A. cages. The T.A. cages cost an arm and a leg, and look better, but don't work as well.

Oddly enough the Bor Yueh cage is symmetrical at both ends with a very slight upward curve...

The original did not have a flat-metal front mount section at all. It was just another round aluminum tube like the rest of the frame, bent downward, then bent again and flattened to fit behind (or in front of) the rear brake bridge. You can see it, sort of, in this pic:

Ahhh, I get it now... I'm guessing the rack is roughly the same age as my '82 Miyata 610, so it should work out nicely then!

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

Bor Yeuh is decent stuff. I have two bikes that came completely out fitted with full Bor Yeuh racks. Never had a problem with them. I like that side entry cage, that is the first one I have ever seen. The bikes are Giant Excursions.
