snot rockets all the way. but then, I guess I've practiced it enough that I can shoot one straight down between my arm and leg. Almost zero chance of it hitting another rider unless they are riding right next to me within 2 feet.

About the only time I won't do it is I know I don't have a ... "full" rocket, so to say. If it's just a very small one it tends to come out as a spray, instead of a compact rocket. In those situations, I just wipe with my glove until I can build up more, or until I'm at the back. Or I'll try sucking it up and then spitting it out.
