Why is it that when there is a question about what us new ss/fg guys looking to not spend a lot should buy, anyone who suggests anything other than something from Bikedirect is attacked as a shill for some other bikeness?

This. But not really the right thread to ask the question.

For a halfway decent low cost bike bikesdirect is generally your best option. A good quality single speed or fixed gear bike, any bike really, isn't cheap, hence your options are very limited if you're looking to buy new and spend no more than $300-400 all-in. When buying a bike, particularly if your looking for something above and beyond mere transportation - any old bike will accommodate that - you need to qualify your needs and expectations and then ask the question, "how much is this going to cost me?" Don't get me wrong. I can totally appreciate operating on a budget, but many newbies are unrealistic about cost. Save up for your dream bike and buy something cheap, perhaps second-hand, if you need a bike here and now.
