I learned the snot rocket technique from my grandfather when I was just a litte kid. I remember watching him work on a cold day, and he'd take his knuckle, close of one nostril, and launch the snot out the other. Then he'd proceed to the opposite nostril. I've proudly taken after my grandfather's tradition, and it's come very useful to me in running, biking, and other occasions.
Back when I played ice hockey, I learned to spit out thick saliva to help me breathe better. This too has helped me in athletic competitions. I can launch a wad of spit at least 15 feet if I get a good breath behind it. The distance is handy when you have a group of riders behind you, you can aim it forward and to the side, it clears the whole peloton by far.
