This is possible if the original threads were English or metric. Bicycle Research made a reamer/tap set for exactly this purpose:



You run the reamer through to remove the existing threads, then use the tap to cut Italian threads into the shell. You could probably use your existing cartridge or spindle if you can source compatible Italian thread mounting rings or cups.
