What to do with a frame that has a stripped BB?

I was hearing a nasty creak from my new bike and decided to take the BB out for inspection, when I realized that it was completely stripped out. I contacted Airborne and they sent me a new frame and BB, but do not want the old frame back.

Question: What are my options for this frame other than hanging it on the wall in the man-cave?

You could always do this https://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...-brackets.html and a crank set to go with it . It save the frame for use again .

That is a great idea, however, they will not work on mountain bike frames...

"These BB's won't work on mountain bikes as their standard width (73mm) is too wide for the shell to expand. They do not work on Italian threaded BB shells because those have a wider ID."

Have you attempted to have a shop rethread it? Sometimes there is enough to retap it.

That I haven't, as I have never had a problem (not quite a problem since they shipped me a new frame) like this before. Good to know though! I will call around today to see what I can come up with.

"Sometimes there is enough to retap it." Judging by the amount of metal in the BB and missing from the shell, I doubt that it would succeed. Tapping can only remove metal, not replace that which is missing.

Put new a BB in with Loctite 690. It will never move again until you heat it, maybe not even then.

You can always face the shell to 68mm and use the VO threadless BB.
SJS cycles has a no-name one for 73mm, but it's only 116mm . https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/threadles...ads-prod32374/

Thanks for the tips guys! I just hate seeing a relatively new frame just get junked, but this points me in the right direction.

Too bad it was not steel ! You caould have the BB shell replaced I know of a frame builder in Ohio who does this for under a hundred bucks.

What about re-tapping it to Italian threads ?

I was going to suggest, as another poster has already, to have the shell faced down to 68mm but you may run into the ring(s) hitting the chainstay unless you find one with a long enough axle to push the chainline out to where it would normally be with a 73mm bb.

This is possible if the original threads were English or metric. Bicycle Research made a reamer/tap set for exactly this purpose:

You run the reamer through to remove the existing threads, then use the tap to cut Italian threads into the shell. You could probably use your existing cartridge or spindle if you can source compatible Italian thread mounting rings or cups.
