When did they start anodizing rims?

It's getting harder and harder to find vintage polished aluminum rims. Most of what I see for sale is anodized, but they just don't look right on older bikes. I'm wondering when rim anodizing began, and when it became prevalent (I suppose somebody was doing it in 1930 or something, on a small scale). It seems to have gone from everything-polished in 1970 to everything-anodized by the mid-80's.
