I don't think SPD's would have helped at all, if not made it worse. Being attached to the bike would have been a much bigger wreck, and probably much more painful of a landing for me and my bike. Clipping in is NOT for me, and most likely never will be. I like being able to dab when I need to - I will take that over the "efficiency" of SPD's any day of the week.
