Cycling will always be there. How long you are out of the game at this point is going to be largely contingent upon your recovery habits - don't go out and test your knee all the time. If it feels bad, test it next week with a <30 min flat ride.

I've been there - it sucks. In Dec 2009 I jacked my knee up real bad with a overuse injury that resulted in quadriceps tendonitis, which I still deal with but is under control. I was really bummed because I was putting in huge miles (~18-20 hr weeks, 3 week blocks) and was for sure the fittest of my life; I was going to totally kick ass in the 2010 racing season.
I go in tomorrow for xrays, but the doc was pretty sure it was just inflamed and nothing serious. Whew!

He told me no more centuries or attempts at racing for awhile. He said this weekend I could ease in gradually, like 10 miles or so, lots of spinning, no mashing. He also gave me some topical cream for inflammation and suggested icy/hot before I ride and ice afterwards.

Its killing me not to be able to ride, but I think I'll take the opportunity to try to get a couple of friends into riding. They'd like to ride but were always intimidated by my miles. If we started doing a few miles every week and build up gradually, I think they'll be ready for some longer distances when I'm finally ready for them myself.
