If you play well, people reciprocate the vast majority of the time. Taking the lane does not equal being inconsiderate even if some inconsiderate people take the lane.
I hardly ever have issues with vehicles. I just try to look like I know what I'm doing and put myself in the driver's position. I think most people understand when a cyclist merges into the lane due to debris or a soft shoulder or various other reasons just don't coast and take selfies while doing it.
