A big +1 for the Kool Stop salmon pads. I'm using them on most of my regular riders & they've made a big improvement every time.

If you're using old unlined cable housing, change it for lined housing. I like the Sinz brand for low price & variety of color choices. jrbicycles.com sells it for about $5 for 1 cable & housing set.
