Best replacement brake pads ?
Hi all I have gotten a new set of wheels there nice, shiny. The one problem I'm having is the edge of the rim is polished and dosnt give for a great braking surface. The original pads are raleigh. The caliper I have on the rear is a weinnman 700 not great at all, the front is the weinnman 650 which is Abit better it think. The pads on the rear have a sponging surface built over the rubber. I am wondering is there any good replacement pads I can use, also can they be modern pads or do they have to be the old style I will post pics later on as I'm am not at the laptop.
Thanks

FYI the only place I could find the Kool Stop Weinmann 4 dot pads (or 6 dot or the X'ns) was PorkchopBMX. I had a couple of questions submitted via their contact tool and they got back to me PDQ, even on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered the Weinmann 4 dot pads on Sunday, shipped on Monday, here on my work bench on Wednesday. No complaints. It looks like they'll fit my holders just right. The dimensioned drawings on the Kool Stop site were very helpful in choosing which pads to buy. I was already sold on Kool Stop since I have them on three other bikes.

A big +1 for the Kool Stop salmon pads. I'm using them on most of my regular riders & they've made a big improvement every time.
If you're using old unlined cable housing, change it for lined housing. I like the Sinz brand for low price & variety of color choices. jrbicycles.com sells it for about $5 for 1 cable & housing set.

Kool Stop salmon is the only term you need to know for brake pads.

COLORS - Our colored pads are a semi–aggressive compound that will give you good performance in all weather conditions.

Salmon - Our most famous Salmon compound is also one of our most aggressive compounds for extreme all weather conditions especially in the wet, but still superb in the dry.
Dual - A fusion of our two finest compounds which will give superb braking in all weather conditions. This combination produces a more controlled smooth stop!
Triple - Our triple compound is our most aggressive compound combination for superb braking and controlled stopping in all weather conditions.
If I'm reading it right - are black pads the best choice for my soft alloy rim? I'm looking for pads that won't eat my rims like Shimano pads did.

The Koolstop Salmon pads do not eat rims like the Shimano ones do. One time I thought I finally had a decent stopping set of Shimano pads until I notice the silver metallic dust on the front forks, out they went and now 100% of my bikes have Koolstop salmon pads. Their black pads do not have the initial "bite" like the salmon pads do. The salmon ones "grab" hard as soon as they touch the rim, no need for a lot of pressure on the brake lever.
I even have 1 bike with the world famous Turkey Levers and that one stops just fine using the turkey levers, I can get the back wheel off the ground on hard stops. Maybe turkey levers aren't that bad, maybe it was the fact that most bikes with turkey levers had chrome steel rims and terrible brake pads.
