We have this on an ancient Western Flyer mountain bike and, yes, it does work: changes the rear thumb shifter from indexed to friction. No need for it on the FD. I assume if the RD got wacked in the woods and indexing was outta business you could just switch to friction and get home AOK. Maybe a fix for a problem that didn't come up.
