Okay, so what's this thing?
I just bought an 80's Miami Vice themed Rockhopper. I was thinking it was going to be all friction shift, but the rear is indexed.
The thumb shifter for the rear has a 'lever' that will move a small amount front/back (it will move 1/2" or so?). The friction front shifter doesn't have it.
I don't notice any difference with it moved forward or backward.
What does it do?

Just gave that a try--nothing changed. I wish that what it was though. That would be a genius feature!
Thanks for the very quick response.

We have this on an ancient Western Flyer mountain bike and, yes, it does work: changes the rear thumb shifter from indexed to friction. No need for it on the FD. I assume if the RD got wacked in the woods and indexing was outta business you could just switch to friction and get home AOK. Maybe a fix for a problem that didn't come up.

Assuming that's a Shimano thumbshifter, the lever switches between indexing and friction modes.
And as others have said, yours may or may not be working. Try it a few times before you write it off, though.

Does it always run indexed or friction? In the latter case, your index detents have gotten messed up. This is no big loss -- I always run my SunTour thumb shifter in friction mode, anyway, which allowed me to change rear wheels from a SunTour 7-speed freewheel to a Shimano 8-speed cassette.
